Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the amount of time your child spends on a screen?  Between home and school, it feels as if my children are constantly staring at a screen.  Textbooks have all but been replaced with Chromebooks and iPads.  My kids seemingly spend all day in front of a screen at school which has led to the purchase of blue-light glasses and constant complaints of headaches.  Homework is done, you guessed it, on a screen and then they want to spend time relaxing while watching a TV show or playing video games with friends.  It’s exhausting constantly monitoring the amount of time they’re on their screen in addition to ensuring the content they’re consuming is age appropriate.  In the end, I want to throw my hands up and say “I give up!”  While it’s the easy route, giving up isn’t an option.  

It’s essential to understand how screen time impacts our children’s development and we need to learn how to strike a healthy balance between technology use and other activities. Let’s explore the effects of excessive screen time on child development and look at practical tips for managing screen time effectively.


Understanding the Impact

Research has shown that excessive screen time can have negative effects on various aspects of child development, including physical, cognitive, and social emotional skills. Prolonged screen exposure has been linked to issues such as obesity, sleep disturbances, attention problems, and delays in language and social skills development.
